Andrea Mantegna: Death of the Virgin (1462-64)

A painting by the italian artist Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506). The painting shows the death of the virgin Mary who is surrounded by 11 Apostles (according to legends the Apostle Thomas was not present). The scene in the background is the Laguna of Mantua with the Castello di San Giorgio (part of the Ducal palace in Mantua) with the pont de San Giorgio in Mantua. This painting was commissioned by the Gonzaga family of Mantua and is from 1462-1464.
