Caravaggio: The Supper at Emmaus (1601)

The subject of this painting is Luke 24:13-35 from the bible. According to the story, two disciples  of Jesus wwere walking to Emmaus (a town north of Jerusalem) after the Crucifixion. On the road the two met a stranger and asked him to join them at their evening meal. During the meal, the stranger took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to the two disciples. Immediatly the eyes of the two were opened and they recognized the stranger as the resurrected Jesus and Jesus vanished out of their sight. The painting shows the moment of the blessing of the bread and the revealing of Jesus of his true identity to the two disciples. Painting from 1601.
