Ludolf de Jongh: Portrait of Jan Jansz. van Nes, vice-admiral of Holland and West-Friesland (1666)
(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
Another portrait of a famous Dutch Admiral of the 17th century. This time of Jan Jansz. van Nes (1631-1680). Together with his brother Aert Jansz. van Nes he served in the Dutch navy in almost every war from 1650-1675. Most of his battles were against the English during the second and third Anglo-Dutch Wars. He also took part during the famous 1667 Dutch raid on the Medway. This is a standard portrait of a naval commander - notice the ships in the background which is a common practice in these portraits. This portrait is from 1666
