Quirijn van Brekelenkam: Sentimental Conversation (1660s)
(Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)
This is a typical Dutch genre scene of the 17th century. In this case two ordinary people are engaged in a conversation over a glass of wine. What the conversation is about is not unknown but the face of the woman suggests that it is an emotional one. Perhaps a lovers quarrel? The painting in the back is that of rocky road. Perhaps a reflection of the feelings of the man and woman? Painting from the early 1660s.
