Jean-Léon Gérôme: Markos Botsaris (1874)

This is a famous painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme. It depicts Markos Botsaris, a Greek hero of Greek War of Independence (1821-1832). Markos Botsaris led the Greek forces during the revolution against the Ottoman Empire and was a skillfull partisan leader in Western Greece. During the Battle of Karpenisi (august 8, 1823) he was killed while scouting the Ottoman positions. This painting if from 1874.
