Nicolas de Largillierre: Portrait of André François Alloys de Theys d'Herculais (1727)
(The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)
This person on this painting is thought to be André François Alloys de Theys d’Herculais (1692–1779) at the age of 35. His family came from the region of Grenoble. His father held several posts in the service of the Frnech king Louis XIV. According to family tradition, André was a captain in the Clermont-Condé cavalry regiment. The breastplate and helmet reappear in other painting from Nicolas de Largillierre so they were owned by the painter to be used in portraits like these. This painting is from 1727.
