Bartholomeus van der Helst & Ludolf Bakhuizen: Portrait of Vice-Admiral Johan de Liefde (1668)

Johan de Liefde was a Dutch Vice-Admiral. He fought during all three Anglo-dutch wars and against the Swedes. A close friend of admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter, he was killed during the Battle of Texel on August 21, 1673. Bartholomeus van der Helst painted the portrait, the naval battle in the background was done by Ludolf Bakhuizen (Bakhuizen was an expert in painting maritime subjects). This painting is from 1668.
