Lucas Cranach the Elder: Portrait of Henry IV the Pious, Duke of Saxony, and his wife Katharina von Mecklenburg (1514)
(Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, Germany)
Yesterday a painting of their daughters, now the two paintings of the parents. Left: Henry IV the Pious, Duke of Saxony, Margrave of Meissen, Lord of Friesland and right - his wife Katharina von Mecklenburg, Duchess consort of Saxony. Henry was duke of Saxony for only 2 years but his main achievement was making Lutheranism the state religion of the Duchy of Saxony. These two paintings were made shortly after their marriage in 1512. Henry is 41 on this painting and Katharina is 27. The couple had 6 children in total - 3 daughters and 3 sons. Both paintings are from 1514.
