Pere Nunyes: Saint Eligius consecrated as a bishop (1526-1529)

Pere Nunyes was a Portugese painter from the 16th century. This work forms part of an altarpiece for the silversmiths' guild in the church of La Mercè in Barcelona which shows 6 episodes from the life of Saint Eligius. The main person on this piece is Saint Eligius (A.D. 588-660). Eligius was financier and minister of the Merovingian king Dagobert I and was appointed bishop of Noyon-Tournai (shown here). Eligius main work is the conversion of the population of Flanders to Christianity and he is the patron saint of goldsmith, metalworkers, coin collectors, horses and saddlers.
