Alexander Roslin: Portrait of Jeanne Sophie de Vignerot du Plessis, Countess of Egmont Pignatelli in Spanish Costume (1763)
(Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA)
Another fine example of the portraits made by Roslin. This time a French lady from the 18th century. The sitter is Jeanne Sophie de Vignerot du Plessis (1740-1773), daughter of Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, duke de Richelieu and Marshal of France. Jeanne Sophie married in 1755 with with Don Casimir Pignatelli, Count of Egmont. Jeanne organized a lot of salons (a social gathering with different kind of people - the purpose was 'either to please or to educate'). This painting is from 1763, which means that Jeanne is 23 on this.
