A great portarit by the Dutch painter Jacob Fransz. Van der Merck (1610-1664). Depicted is Claes (Nicolaes) Hendriksz. de Munt who was a brewer in Leiden. On this painting he is depicted as the captain of the orange company (as the color of sash shows) in the civic guard of the town of Leiden. This portrait was commissioned as a set of 4, each portrait depicting a captain of 1 of the civic guard companies of Leiden, for the Doelen (the meeting hall and training grounds for a civic guard) in Leiden. Painting from 1657.
