Miguel Jacinto Meléndez: The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1734)
(Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain)
a painting by the Spanish artist Miguel Jacinto Meléndez (1679-1734). The subject of this painting is a legend regarding the burial of Don Gonzalo Ruíz from Orgaz. According to the story Saint Augustine and Saint Stephen appeared from the heavens during his burial and buried Orgaz with their own hands. The legend was already painted by el Greco (The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, 1586) but Meléndez made his own version of it. Painting from 1734.
