Bernhard Strigel: The Holy Family (1520)

(Kunst Historisches Museum, Vienna, Austria)

A painting by the German artist Bernhard Strigel (1460-1528). The painting shows Jesus and John the Baptist with their parents. Indicated by the Latin text on the painting:

Top Text (from left to right):
ANNA VNICUVM VIDVI/MATIS SPECIMEN - Anne (mother of Mary)
IOACHIM VNICVS MARITVS ANNAE - Joachim, married with Anna
IOSEPH MARI/TVS VIRG - Joseph/ Married to the Virgin (Mary)
ELIZABETH/COGNATA/MARIAE/VIRG - Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist)/ Relative of the Virgin Mary
ESMERIA.SOROR. AN/NAE MINOR NATV - Esmeria, younger sister of Anne (mother of Mary) and mother of Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist)
ZACHARIAS - Zechariah (father of John the Baptist)

At the bottom is the following text:
MARIA.ILLABIS.REGINA/VIRGINITATIS' IDEA - The Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven
HIESUS CHRISTUS/SERVATOR NOSTER - Jesus Christ/ Our Saviour
IOANNES BAPTISTA SANCTIFICATVS/IN VTERO - John the Baptist/ Sanctified in the womb

On the band of John the Baptist: ECCE AGNUS DEI QUI TOLLIT PECCATA MUNDI - Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World

The bearded man on the right without a name is perhaps (my personal guess) the nameless husband of Esmeria. Esmeria (or Hismeria) is only mentioned in Jacobus de Voragine’s 'The Golden Legend'. Painting from 1520.
