Heinrich Aldegrever: The Large Wedding Dancers (1538)
(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
A nice set of 12 engravings by the German artist Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1538). The set shows several elegantly dressed men and women who are walking and dancing to the music. The group is led on engraving 1 by a master of ceremonies with a dog, two men with torches (engraving 2) and and the end is a group of three musicians who are playing on a sackbut (a type of trombone from the Renaissance and Baroque era). The set is called the 'Large Wedding Dancers' because of the size of the individual prints (117 mm × 77 mm), Aldegrever also made a Wedding Dancers set which is smaller with each individual enrgaving 52 mm × 37 mm. Set from around 1538.
