Master FVB: The monk and the spinster (1475-1500)
(Albertina, Vienna, Austria)
An engraving by the anonymous Flemish artist with the notname 'Master FVB' (named after the initials on his art). This engraving shows sexual violence between a monk and a spinster. The woman was spinning in a quite courtyard and was surprised by the monk. The monk is holding the right hand of the woman and touching her under her skirt with his other hand. The reason behing the engraving is unknown - could be anti-clerical motives (this is the time of the rise of the protestant reformation): the monk is the agressor here. As a man of faith he, of all people, should know better. Engraving from 1475-1500.
