Pieter Aertsen: The Fat Kitchen (1565-1575)

(Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark)

A painting by the Dutch artist Pieter Aertsen (1508-1575). A typical still life of Aertsen which shows a wide array of food: meat, fish, bread and vegetables. On the right is a man, woman and child have turned their back to the two couples on the left which have gathered around a fireplace and enjoying themselves. The entire scene is a warning against the 'voluptas carnis', a life dedicated to the senses which leads to gluttony, drunkenness and moral looseness. Schilderij uit 1565-1575.
