Anonymous: Portrait of the giant Bartlmä Bona and the dwarf Thomele (16th century)

(Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria)

A painting by an unknown 16th century German artist. On the right is the Thomele, the court dwarf of archduke Ferdinand II of Further Austria (1529 – 1595) - Thomele is 65 cm tall on this painting. The identity of the man on the left not exactly known. His stature matches the armor in Ambras Castle of the Italian giant Bartlmä Bona who was in Vienna for a tournament in 1560. Archduke Ferdinand probably commissioned this painting depicting the largest and the smallest man known to him. Painting from the end of the 16th century.
