Jan Toorop: The old men by the sea (1901)

(Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands)

A painting by the Dutch-Indonesian artist Jan Toorop (1858-1928). Two old men are sitting in the sand at the beach with around them are dancing girls, men working, a mother and daughter. Around this time Toorop was living and working in the fishing village Katwijk so this piece was probably inspired by what he saw there. The piece is an example of pointillism - a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are used. Painting from 1901.
