Thérèse Schwartze: Portrait of Aleida van Ogtrop-Hanlo with her five children (1906)
(Centraal Museum, Utrecht, The Netherlands)
A painting by the Dutch artist Thérèse Schwartze (1851-1918). This family portrait shows Aleida van Ogtrop-Hanlo (1871-1944) with five of her children (a sixth wasn't born at the time). Aleida Hanlo was the daughter of the physician Jan Hanlo and Maria Heerkens. Aleida was a regent of the 'Rooms Catholijk Maagdenhuis' in Amsterdam, an orphanage for Catholic girls. She married with the businessman Henri van Ogtrop (1866-1914) in 1894. Henri was a successful stockbroker and politician but also liked to spend his money. When Henri died in 1914 at the age of 48 the family was plunged into deep mourning and financial difficulties. His widow Aleida never recovered from the loss and had to be admitted to a psychiatric institution, where she died in 1944. Shown on this portrait are, from left to right:
- Adriënne van Ogtrop (1896- ?), married with Pieter Theodoor Carst
- Pieter van Ogtrop (1904-1958), married with Eug. A.M.C. v. Voorst tot Voorst and became mayor of Eemnes and Blaricum
