Adriaen van Cronenburg: Portrait of Rienck van Cammingha and Gerrolt van Cammingha (1552)
(Frisian Museum, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands)
Two paintings by the Dutch artist Adriaen van Cronenburg (1535/45-1604). These two men are members of the Van Cammingha family, a powerfull family from the northern Dutch province of Friesland. On the right is Rienck van Cammingha (1517-1584), the youngest son of Wytze van Cammingha and Rints Fransdr van Minnema. Rienck inherited the family castle of Camminghaburg from his parents (which made him lord of Camminghaburg) and married with Beyts Feddesdr. van Haercla. The young man on the right is Gerrolt van Cammingha (1542-1589), a nephew of Rienck, and who Rienck designated as his successor as lord of Camminghaburg in his will. Gerrolt would succeed his uncle in 1584 but he died five years later after which the family castle went to Gerrolt's son Minne van Cammingha (?-1599). On the portrait of Rienck is the family castle visible in the background, situated against a fantasy mountain landscape. Paintings from 1552.
