Anonymous: Toji Landscape Screens (11-12th century)

(Kyoto National Museum, Kyoto, Japan)

A painting made by unknown Japanese artists. This piece is a folding screen (a byōbu) which was used to separate interiors and enclose private spaces. This rare example came from the Tō-ji temple (a Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect in Kyoto) and is the only surviving screen painting from the Heian period (A.D. 794 to 1185).
