After Antonio da Sangallo the Younger: Saint Peter's Basilica (1547)
(Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Netherlands)
An engraving made by an unknown Italian artist, after a design by the Italian architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger (11484 – 1546). This piece comes from the book "Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae" or "(Mirror of Roman Magnificence", a collection of engravings of Rome and Roman antiquities. This piece was the design of the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger for the new Saint Peter's Basilica. This new church would replace the old 4th-century Saint Peter's Basilica. Various architects proposed different designs, including Michelangelo and Raphael. The design of Sangallo was eventually rejected in favour of the one of Donato Bramante. Engraving from 1547.
