(The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA)

An illuminated page made by the Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601) and the Croatian artist György Bocskay (1510-1575). This page comes from a book called "Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta" (Model Book of Calligraphy). The book was started by György Bocskay, court secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, in 1561 to demonstrate his technical mastery of calligraphy. After the death of Bocskay, the Flemish Hoefnagel was commissioned in 1591 by holy roman emperor Rudolph II to illuminate Bocskay's model book. Hoefnagel added pictures of various fruit, plants, flowers and insects to almost every page. On this page Hoefnagel added Insects, Basil Thyme, and Land Snails. Text from 1561-1562, illuminations from 1591 - 1596.
