(Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, Germany)
An illustrated page made by the German artist Hans Burgkmair the younger (1500-1559). This page comes comes from a tourmanent book (or Turnierbuch), usually a record of a specific tournament that occurred. In this case the book contains copies of woodcuts made by Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473-1531), father of the artist. These woodcuts were commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) for a monumental allegorical triumph ('The Triumphs of Maximilian') a book which was to be composed of more than 200 woodcuts. This book shows various various knights and officials from Maximilian's court representing different variations of tournament fighting, both mounted and on foot. Illustration from 1540.
