Unknown: The 110th Pennsylvania Infantry after the battle of Fredericksburg (1862-1865)
(Library of Congress, Washington DC, USA)
A vintage photo taken by an unknown American photographer. This photo shows company C of the 110th Pennsylvania Infantry, an Union Infantry during the American civil war (1861-1865). This regiment was formed in 1861 with about 400 volunteers coming from Blair County, Huntingdon County, Bedford County, the city of Philadelphia, Centre and Clearfield Counties - company C was composed of men from Blair and Bedford Counties (an Union regiment usually consisted of 1,000 men on paper when first organized but attrition of disease, combat, and desertion would rapidly reduce this number). During most of its service the regiment was assigned to the army of the Potomac. According to the title of this photo this was taken 'after the battle of Fredericksburg' - this is either the first battle of Fredericksburg (December 11–15, 1862) or the second (May 3, 1863). 196 officers and enlisted men of the 110th were either killed in action, mortally wounded or died of disease during their terms of service with the regiment. This represents slightly over 10% of the total enrollment. Photo from 1862-1865.
