Vittore Crivelli: Saint Louis of Toulouse & Saint Bonaventure (1481 - 1502)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Netherlands)

Two paintings by the Italian artist Vittore Crivelli (1440-1502). These two pieces probably belonged to an altarpiece which was broken up sold in several pieces (a common practice). These two depict two saints:

- on the left: saint Bonaventura (1221 – 1274), an Italian scholastic theologian and philosopher. He was the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor and cardinal bishop of Albano. He is regarded as a Doctor of the Catholic Church.
- on the right: saint Louis of Toulouse (1274 – 1297), a Neapolitan prince of the Capetian House of Anjou and bishop of Toulouse.

Paintings from 1481-1502.
