Workshop of Dieric Bouts: Christ and the Virgin Diptych (1470–75)
(National Gallery, London, UK)
Two paintings by the workshop of the Dutch artist Dieric Bouts (1415 – 1475). These two paintings portray Jesus and Virgin Mary in the moments before his Crucifixion. On the left is the virgin Mary as the sorrowing virgin (Mater Dolorosa). Christ is depicted as the Man of Sorrows or Ecce homo. Both represent the physical and mental suffering. These two panels were very popular and were copied often. Painting from 1470-1475.
