Alessandro Magnasco: Praying monks (1710-1740)

Two paintings by the Italian artist Alessandro Magnasco (1667 – 1749). Praying monks were a favorite subject of Magnasco who produced various paintings of monks in various settings, usually when they are praying. These two paintings show monks of two different orders:

On the left: Three Capuchin monks in meditating prayer

On the right: Three Camaldolese Monks in Ecstatic Prayer
