Master of Calamarca: The angel Letiel (17th century)

(Church of Calamarca, Calamarca, Bolivia)

A painting made an unknown Bolivian artist with the notname 'Master of Calamarca'. This painting is part of a set of angels made for the Church of Calamarca. This type of angel is called a 'ángel arcabucero' (arquebusier angel) - the angel is depicted with an arquebus instead of the sword traditional for martial angels and dressed in clothing inspired by that of the Andean nobles and aristocrats. This style arose in the viceroyalty of Peru in the second half of 17th century and continued until the 20th century. Painting from the 17th century.
