Anonymous: A Peri and a Shurale in a forest (17th-18th century)

(Unknown)

A drawing made by an unknown Ottoman artist. A Peri is a winged spirit from Persian and Armenian mythologies. They are seen as benevolent creatures who represent "the idyllic tranquility of the enchanted forest". A Shurale/ Şüräle is creature who lives in the forest and has long fingers, horns and a woolly body. It lures victims to a thicket and can tickle them to death. This scene shows a Peri in the forest. A Shurale is pouring liquid from a bottle into the bottle of the kneeling Peri. At the top another horned forest demon can be seen. Drawing from the 17th-18th century.
