Anonymous: Portrait of Johan II van Wassenaer (17th century)

(Lakenhal, Leiden, The Netherlands)

A painting made by an unknown Dutch artist, after an earlier painting by Jan Mostaert. The depicted man here is Johan (or Jan) II van Wassenaer (1483 - 1523), the viscount of Leiden. Johan was a brave officer in the service of holy Roman emperor Charles V. He was injured several times during battles (the large scare on the cheek was the result of such an injury: during the siege of Padua he was shot through the cheek by a bullet) and was eventually killed during the siege of Sloten in 1523. He was married with Josina van Egmond and had two daughters. Painting from the 17th century.
