Titian: Diana and Actaeon (1556–1559)

(National Gallery, London, UK)

A painting by the Italian artist Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio (1488/90 – 1576), better known as Titian. This piece is part of a set of seven paintings which depict mythological scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses which were painted for king Philip II of Spain. This painting shows the moment in which the hunter Actaeon (the man on the left) bursts in where the goddess Diana (the woman on the right with ta crown with a crescent moon) and her nymphs are bathing. Diana is furious and turns Actaeon into a stag, who is then pursued and killed by his own hounds. Painting from 1556-1559.
