Eduardo Rosales Gallinas: The stigmatization of Saint Catherine of Siena (1862)
(Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain)
A painting by the Spanish artist Eduardo Rosales Gallinas (1836-1873). Saint Catherine of Siena (1347 – 1380) was an influential laywoman associated with the Dominican Order from Siena, Italy. She had a strong influence in the history of the papacy (she played an important role with Pope Gregory XI leaving Avignon for Rome, the 'Avignon Papacy') and was an important writer. During the celebration of Mass in 1375 in Pisa, Saint Catherine received the stigmata (the appearance of bodily wounds, scars and pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ) after which she fainted - shown here on this painting. Painting from 1862.
