Cornelis de Jonker: The Kitchen of the Old Women's home (1785)

A painting by the Dutch artist Cornelis de Jonker (1761-1830). This painting shows the interior of the old women's home in the Dutch city of Gorinchem. This old women's home was founded in 1604 and was located at the Haarstraat. In 1865 they moved to another location at the Groenmarkt were it is still today. The ladies at the table are the women who are living in this home. all of them are wearing the same type of clothing and the same type of coif. The woman who is standing at the fireplace is the 'binnenmoeder' Teuntje Stek (literally 'inner mother', she was running the daily affairs of the institute. Painting from 1785.
