Nicolaas van der Waay: A summer evening at the Toll House (1891)

(Unknown)

A painting by the Dutch artist Nicolaas van der Waay (1855 – 1936). This painting shows a scene in Amsterdam. The Toll House was built in 1662 for the collection of toll of ships who used the Buikslotertrekvaart. As the toll house was situated near the riverside of the river IJ, the place offered a nice view of Amsterdam (shown here in the background). Starting in the 18th century, citizens from Amsterdam came to relax at this place. The toll house changed from a place to collect toll to a restaurant/ Café - as shown here. The tollhouse itself still exists today as a restaurant/ Café. Painting from 1891.
