(Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain)
A painting by the Spanish artist Vincenzio Carduccio (1576/78–1638). This painting is part of a set of 54 paintings for the Carthusian Monastery of El Paular, representing the lives of various Carthusian martyrs. This piece shows the Dutch monk Dionysius van Rijkel (1402–1471), also known as Denis the Carthusian. Dionysius van Rijkel is best known for the large number of books that he wrote, including commentaries on the entire Bible and over 900 sermons. He also wrote a series of treatises, laying down rules of Christian living for churchmen and for laymen of every rank and profession. Behind the saint is a vision of God appearing before Dionysius.
