Paulus Potter became a master-painter on August 6, 1646 - having completed his painting-lessons. Potter always had a sketchbook with him and was a very productive artist. He died in 1654 of tuberculosis at the age of 28 although his family said he died from 'painting to much'. This portrait of Potter was done in the year of his death in 1654.
