Johannes Vermeer: The Love Letter (1666)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

This is a nice domestic scene from Vermeer. The setting of the painting looks like that we are looking from another room to this lady and her maidservant. the two paintings behind the two women refer to distant love:  a lonely man on a road (the absence of the man who is writing to the lady) and a ship in a storm (a tempestuous love). The lute of the lady is also a symbol of love. This painting is from around 1666.
