Gerrit van Honthorst: Portrait of prince Willem III of Orange (1650-1702) and his aunt Maria of Nassau (1642- 1688), as children (1653)

(Mauritshuis, The Hague, The Netherlands)

a nice 17th century portrait. On the left we can see William III, the future Stadtholder of Holland and King of England at the age of 3. His aunt Maria of Nassau is to the right at the age of 11. Although William is a boy, he is wearing a dress. Up until recently boys and girls would wear a dress, boys usually until they were 3 (when the child knew how to use a toilet). A painting from 1653.
