(Rijskmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

The Lombok cross was a medal which was presented to the soldiers who took part in the Lombok Expedition in 1894. The reason for this expedition was a fight between the Sasak- and Balinese people in Lombok. The Dutch colonial government decided to send in the army to restore order which was finally achieved after some hard fighting. The presentation of the medals was the first public appearance of the new Queen who was only 14 years old. This painting is from 1895.
