Franz Xaver Winterhalter was a German painter who specialized in portraits of royalty of the 19th century. This painting is a good example of his work. Central figure is Eugénie de Montijo, Empress consort of the French and wife of Emperor Napoleon III of France. The women surrounding her are also royalty who serve as ladies-in-waiting for empress Eugénie. Painting from 1855.
