Anonymous: Portrait of a Surgeon (1569)
(Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA)
A portrait of an unknown man by an unknown Dutch painter. The man on the painting can be identified by the tools which he has: a saw and several keys on his belt and a metal instrument in his left hand which was used by surgeons to cauterize skulls. The tools identify him as either an surgeon or an anatomist. On the right in the background is the text "seit om of swijcht" which translates as "be cautious or keep silent". Painting from 1569.
