Giotto: Scenes from the Life of Christ - 1. The Nativity (1304-1306)
(Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, Italy)
This week is the week of Christmas, therefore everyday i will post a picture with the same subject (the nativity or adoration of the Magi) but from different artists and periodes. First picture is from the famous Iatlian master Giotto di Bondone (1266-1337). This fresco is part of a serie regarding the life of Christ. Depicted is the first fresco - the nativity. Mary and the baby Jesus have taken refuge in a simple shelter. A midwife is giving the baby Jesus to Mary while Joseph is sitting in the forground (sleeping ?). Also present are the shepherds and angels in the sky. Fresco from 1304-1306.
