Hugo van der Goes: The Adoration of the Magi (Monforte Altar), (1470)

(Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany)

Yesterday a nativity from the 14th century, now a nativity from the 15th century. This altarpiece is from the Flemish painter Hugo van der Goes (1430/1440-1482). Originally this was the central panel of a triptych with wings that are now lost. Note that the baby Jesus is not looking at the kneeling Magi (note also the discarted crown at the bottom) but looking directly at us the viewer. Painting from 1470.
