Pedro Berruguete: Saint pope Gregory I (1495)

A piece from the Spanish painter Pedro Berruguete (1450-1504). Depicted is Pope Gregory I, better known as Saint Gregory the Great (papacy from 590 to 604). Pope Gregory was an important figure in the early Christian chruch and is because of this he is recognized as a Doctor of the Church and one of the Latin Fathers (= very influential Christian theologians who wrote in Latin). Another thing he is most famous for is the so-called 'Gregorian chant', a form of chant used in the church. The chant is attributed to Pope Gregory so it carries his name although. Painting from 1495.
