Jheronimus Bosch: The Last Judgment (1486-1510)

(Groeningemuseum, Bruges, Belgium)

This painting is one of the 2 by Jheronimus Bosch (1450-1516) which has the last judgement as its subject. This is version from the  the Groeningemuseum in Bruges (the other one is in Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna). The triptych is divided into 3 parts: left panel is the Garden of Eden, right panel is Hell while the middel panel has the Last Judgement. Christ is at the top, acting as a judge, while being flanked by the apostles and angels who are playing the trumpets of Last Judgement. Below Christ are demons who punish and torture men in  various ways. The scene extends to the right panel with Hell were the sinners are taken too (the burning city in the background is a common theme in the work of Bosch). The souls of the blessed are taken to the left side. They are sitting is a boat with a pink tent and are transported by angels to the Garden of Eden which has the Fountain of Eternal Youth (the tower in the middle). Painting from 1486-1510.
