Unknown: Portrait of Kunigunde of Austria (1485)

(Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain)

A portrait by an unknown artist. The sitter is Kunigunde, the only surviving daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III (1415-1493) and his wife Eleanor of Portugal. Kunigunde is presented here at the age of 20, wearing a low-cut dress with an expensive cross and an elaborate headdress. The painting was probably intended for presentation to possible suitors of Kunigunde. She eventually married with Duke Albert IV of Bavaria-Munich in 1487 after much intrigue and deception by Albert and against the will of her own father Frederick III. The couple got 8 children - 5 daughters and 3 sons. Painting from 1485.
