A historical scene by the German painter Anton von Werner (1843-1915). The painting shows a scene from the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). In this war the second French empire was decisively defeated by a coalition of German states led by Prussia. The war led to the collapse of the second French empire and the unification of Germany. the painting shows a group of German soldiers making music in the salon of a French chateau that they have requisitioned.
