José Campeche y Jordán: The Divine Shepherdess (18th century)

A painting by the Puerto Rican artist José Campeche y Jordán (1751-1809). The painting shows the virgin Mary as a shepherdess, complete with a shepherd’s hat and crook while tending to her flock. The child on her lap is the Christ child. In the background is a lost sheep who calls out 'Ave Maria' while being chased by a wolf which is stricken down by Saint Michael the Archangel. Painting from the 18th century.
