Jan van Eyck: Portrait of a Man with a Blue Chaperon (1430)

(Brukenthal National Museum, Sibiu, Romania)

A beautiful painting by the Flemish artist Jan van Eyck (1390-1441). The painting shows an unknwon man, wearing a blue chaperon (Jan van Eyck used lapis lazuli for the color) - a type of headdress which was popular in Europe during the middle ages. In his right hand the man holds a ring, it is believed that the man is offering the ring as a token of betrothal to a woman who was depicted in a now lost pendant. Painting from around 1430.
